BIRTH: "Life and History of Phineas W. Cook," p. 1, published by the Phineas Wolcott Cook Fam ily Organization. In The history of Goshen, p. 451. "Phineas W." is named as sixth child of Phineas and Iren e (Churchill) Cook, but no birth date given. MICHIGAN: Moved from Goshen, CT with his family in 1838 after his father went bankrupt. Settl ed in Richland, Kalamazoo, Michigan BAPTISM: Baptised into the L.D.S. Church Sept 8, 1845 in the Kalamazoo River at Comstock, Kal amazoo, Michigan, Confirmed by Edward M. Webb and Crandle Dunn. WINTER QUARTERS: Arrived at Winter Quarters in Sept. 1846 and was there until June, 1848. Wor ked at Brigham Young's Mill and at the Summer Quarters farm. In 1847-48 he worked with Georg e D. Grant to supply the camp with wood and forage for the animals. PIONEER TREK TO UTAH: Chosen by Brigham Young to be in the first pioneer company in 1847. H e had to turn down the calling because his wife and child were dying of scurvy. ("The Life an d History of Phineas W. Cook," including his journal, published by the Phineas W. Cook Famil y Organization, #5 N 700E, Brigham City, UT, p. 45). He came to Utah in 1848 with Brigham You ng's Company. SALT LAKE CITY Settled first in Salt Lake City where in March, 1849, he worked on the Chase Mill (Now a t Liberty Park) (p. 59) Worked on the Tithing House in Salt Lake MANTI: Called to go to Manti August, 1850 to work on grist mill all winter. Worked on the sawmill with Charles Shumway, suffering almost daily from the Indian war. Fall 1852-May,1853 he built a house for Brigham Young in Manti SALT LAKE: Was asked by John Young to go back to Salt Lake and organize the SL Water Works, w hich charter he signed with B. Young and Jesse C. Little. Was appointed City Water Master 185 3-1855. (p. 70-83) 1856 Utah State Census: (SL County, 18th Ward (FHL 505913, p. 471) No address, but in 18th Wa rd. In the household are Amanda P. Catharine, Harriet B. Neighbors are Joseph Toronto, Horac e K. Whitney, James N. Barlow, William Salkield, Henry Naisbit, Daniel H. Wells. In the spring of 1854 he was called to superintend the building of Brigham Young's "big hou se." but yielded to others and worked on construction. He built a considerable portion of Bri gham Young's Beehive House himself, especially the bedroom dormers and basement. (p. 75-78) Took two plural wives Dec. 18, 1853 1855 worked on Jedediah M. Grant's house PAYSON On June 1, 1856 he arrived at Payson, having suffered loss of job and loss of favor with t he church leaders and his family having nearly starved to death in Salt Lake. Helped build the house at the Indian Farm at Spanish Fork. Made numerous trips to Salt Creek (Nephi) to contact those who needed to make claims for l osses in the Manti Indian war. GOSHEN: Discovered and moved to the valley now called Goshen, Utah in the fall of 1857. He buil t a dug-out home and later became Bishop of the ward there 1857-1860. He lived near the end o f the lake until called to go to Rich County, Utah. 1860 Census: Goshen, Utah, p. 436. Catherine left him, later divorcing him. Goshen residents never forgot the incident. In 199 9 one of the retold the story of Phineas Wolcott Cook, the first Bishop of Goshen whose pictu re hangs in the foyer of the old chapel. “He had three wives,” they say, “and one wife was g iving him a lot of trouble. So he sold her for a barrel of pickles!” (Teresa Dickson) BEAR LAKE, UTAH In the fall of 1863 Phineas was called to settle Bear Lake Valley in Rich County, Utah. Af ter a long trip from Utah Valley, through Logan and into Paris, Idaho, they camped Dec. 7, 18 63 at Paris. Spring 1863 they moved a few miles south to Swan Creek on the west side of the lake, event ually building a home, barns, and a grist mill in the canyon. Eventually they added a sawmil l and carding machine. The family agreed to sponsor Johanna Polson as a plural wife, and sent money so she coul d immigrate. She arrived at Swan Creek July 22, 1878. Forced to live in Logan for a while to avoid arrest for polygamy. Did temple work there. At age 69 Phineas was arrested and sent to prison for having more than one wife. STAR VALLEY, WYOMING In 1889 he moved from Logan to Star Valley, Wyoming with his youngest family because Uta h had become dangerous for polygamous families. This may certify tha t Mr. Phineas W. Cook, aged 20 of Richland, Kalamazoo County, was united in marriage to Mis s Ann Eliza Howland, aged 16 of Ross, county aforesaid and also that Mr. Soloman C. Hall an d wife of Ross were witnesses present at same marriage. Further that said marriage was solemn ized at Ross, Kalamazoo County, Jany 1, 1840 by Calvin Clark, Minister of the Gospel.” pp. 66-67. She was married at the same time as her sister Ann Maria. The town in which they were married was Howlandburg, but it no longer exists. Now Ross.
