Note | BIRTH and DEATH: Joseph Wolcott Cook, born 21 April 1855 at Salt Lake City, died 25 Feb. 1931 at Paris, Idaho. His parents and both wives are named in the record. (FHL 982,442, Paris Idaho Stake cemeteries (burials), 1863-1970). Five of his children, their birth and burial are in this record. Found in Garden City Ward Records: "J W. Cook, son Phineas W. Cook and Catherine McCleve b. 21 Apr 1855 at SL City, UT. Baptized 4 Sept. 1863 by Wm. Whitehead. Confirmed 4 Sept 1863 by Elias Gardener. Ordained an Elder in Dec. 1879 by R. Calder. Ordained a Seventy May 1884 by M. Booth. Rebaptized 1876 by Hyrum Rich and re-confirmed Sept. 1876 by Robert Pope. Received in Ward 11 May 1879. Married Nov. 4 1883 by J. F. Smith." BORDER, WYOMING Joseph Wolcott and his brother William Cook went into business together in Border, Wyoming, just across the border from the northern tip of Bear Lake not far from Garden City, where most of their family lived. Several brothers from Garden City joined with them in proposing a ditch, submitting an affidavit to Uinta County, Wyoming, first on 28 July 1883 for “a dam to be hereafter constructed across said Bear River” in order to provide water for irrigation; and second on 23 September 1886 for a permit to dig a ditch twenty feet wide and four miles long, flowing westerly from the Bear River. (Uinta County, Wyoming, Mixed Records, FHL 973,813, affidavit 29791, Book 28, pp. 67-68 and FHL 973,814, item 2, pp. 2, 442-444.) Alonzo, David S. and Henry H. Cook of Garden City also signed the affidavit. GARDEN CITY: (Garden City Ward, Paris Idaho Stake, General Minutes beginning1879, Church History Library, LR 3095 11.) Teacher’s Meeting held Oct. 24, 1879: Bro. J. W. Cook was appointed to act as Teacher in our ward. Bro. H. Allred was appointed Sunday School Supt. With C. T. Longhurst first asst. and A. C. Rich second. Roll 2, p. 41 June 19, 1881, Bros. J. W. Cook and Rich did not visit their dist. The reason was neglect. p. 20, J. W. Cook visited the south district and found all well. Dated Oct. 23, 1881. C. T. (or J) Longhurst resigned so J.W. Cook assigned the north district. p. 21, Meeting Nov. 20, 1881: J. W. Cook said opening prayer. He then reported on the north district and said they visited only four houses. Two of the four houses did not attend to their prayers. J.W. Cook appointed to visit the north district. p. 24, Teacher’s meeting Feb. 8, 1882: Jo. W. Cook and B. H. Allred visited the North Dist. They visited nearly all of the saints those they visited was feeling well in their religion. They found no difficulties. p. 25, Feb. 26, 1882, J.W. Cook, opening prayer. J. W. Cook agreed it would be advisable to hold fast meetings once every month. March 2, 1882 J. w. Cook reported the 2nd district. He and D. S. Cook visited and W. Spencer helped to finish. p. 28, May 21, 1882, J.W. Cook opening prayer. Bro. B. H.l Allred said he believed there was a great deal of party feeling among us as a ward. He said he had felt the Spirit of Opposition. Bishop Calder advised the quorum to exercise all the influence they could in their visits among the saints. p. 29, July 2, 1882: J W Cook said opening prayer. He rported on 2nd dist. No complaints only one male member who did not believe all the principles taught by the Elders. p. 30, Sept 22, 1882, JW Cook south Dist. Found some slothful in the dutys. Majority feeling well no trouble reported. p. 31, Oct. 22, 1882 C. T. Longhurst notified to appear before the Bishop’s court at the school house Oct. 28, 1882 to answer to a charge of Joseph W. Cook for drunkenness and profanity. p. 32, Oct. 28, 1882 Bishops court. Longhurst left the meeting house. Alonzo cook said he should have been glad to have done away with the Bishop’s court-providing C. T. Longhurst should have restitution. B. H. Allred asked permission to say a few words in behalf of Joe and George Longhurst who was present. He told them it was the duty of the bishop and teacher never to sustain such proceedings. Jos. W. Cook said it was his mind and will exactly. p. 34, Nov. 19, 1882, J.W. Cook did not visit Middle Dist on account of Bro. Cook agreeing to call on him, and did not. May 18, 1884, J.W. Cook opening prayer. Br. Joseph Cook spoke upon the counsels given at the late Priesthood Meeting. He showed the responsibilities devolving upon the Saints. p. 68 June 28, 1884, J.W. Cook, 2nd Dist. With D. S. Cook. J. W. Cook dismissed the meeting. p. 69, Sept 14, 1884, Opening prayer, J.W. Cook p. 71, October 26, 1884, J.W. Cook reported 3rd dist. and reported no complaints. Found some neglectful to their prayers. 1900 CENSUS: Montpelier, Bear Lake, Idaho. Joseph is 45, born about 1855 and his wife Eliza S is 28; married 9 years. She claims to be the mother of four children, three of whom are living. Both were born in Utah. His father born in Connecticut and her father in Ireland. His mother was born in Ireland and hers in New York. Children, all born in Idaho, are Eldon W. born Sept. 1892, Erma born Jan. 1894, and Bryson S. born April 1899. 1920 CENSUS: Bear Lake, Idaho. Joseph W., Eliza S. and four children: Samuel B., Elizabeth, Merrill E. and Helen. DEATH: Idaho Death Certificates, 1911-1937, State File # 74090, Film 1530888. Joseph Wolcott Cook died 25 Feb 1931 at Paris, Bear Lake, Idaho where he resided. Buried 1 March, 1931. He was a farmer. Wife was Eliza S. Bryson. He was born at Salt Lake City 21 April 1855, son of Phineas Wolcott Cook who was born in Wallingford, CT and Catherine Mcleave who was born in Belf, Ireland. He was 75 years old. |
